Online brokerage account minimum initial deposits generally start at $2,000. Special promotional offers may have different equity requirements. If you are requesting an account with margin or options privileges, a minimum deposit of $2,000 is required regardless of special offers.

Account Type Description
Individual A standard brokerage account with only one owner. Upon the death of the owner, all property is passed to the account owner's estate.
Joint Tenants with Rights of Survivorship (JTWROS) Each tenant owns an undivided interest in the account. Upon the death of an account owner, the account is passed to the other owner or owners.
Tenants in Common Account owners can designate ownership percentage of interest in the account. Upon the death of an owner, the deceased's interest is passed to his or her estate. Non-resident aliens are not eligible for this account type.
Community Property Account owners must be a married couple and live in a community property state. Tenants have equal rights to the assets and their appreciated value. They are also equally liable for account losses. Community property states are Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. Non-resident aliens are not eligible for this account type.
Tenants by the Entireties Exclusively for married couples, Joint Tenants by the Entireties accounts are similar to the JTWROS with one exception: the property cannot be sold to pay the debts of one of the account owners. Tenants by the Entireties accounts are available in Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming. Nonresident aliens are not eligible for this account type.
Guardianship or Conservatorship This type of account allows assets to be managed by a legally named guardian or conservator.
